Last Tuesday was a perfect day to be around downtown Chicago and visit the AIGA Small Talk event at the Shedd Aquarium. The event displayed how the in-house creatives on their Planning & Design department work together consistently to provide the better visual design and experience for the visitors.

From the copywriter to the exhibit designer, we had a chance to discuss their challenges and solutions for each promotion media and application. There’s no better way to learn more about any difficulties and results in design project than ask the questions directly from them.

Not only that we learn more about the creative team behind Shedd Aquarium, we also got a complimentary visit to their latest and most visited exhibit: The Jellies. The exhibit room is very well designed. Guided by the Graphic Designer herself, she explains how the area starts with the cool colors and flows to the warm colors in the middle to the end of the exhibit room. Additionally, what makes the room more interesting is that they put a giant Tiger Jellyfish sculpture and small group of jellyfish made of plastic cans. The exhibit room made it possible to bring a different vision to see the jellies. A very well done exhibit.

Since late March, you have seen the sneak peek on my latest collaboration with Scratch Clothing Bali. And here we finally have the final look of the t-shirt, Scratch the Timeless by Chykalophia. Yay!!A little bit about Scratch:

Starting from 2007, and build from excessive imagination, two people from Bali who have a very different characters, who tries to get out of these limits agreed to create a clothing company.

Scratch Ouch Bali standing because of the desire of its founder who wanted to continue going forward, without borders, full of dreams and struggled to get the best.

Scratch Ouch Bali is an indie clothing who want to raise the typical clothing from Bali, with the concept of maximum to maximize their customer’s satisfaction. With the two sides of different personalities, Horror and Pop (they called it as “HORPOP), Scratch Ouch Bali try to give the impression of “Ouch” that makes customer feel “OUCH” and touch with their artworks.

The main idea of Scratch Ouch Bali is to give maximum quality concept with free of imagination and dream.

If you want to promote your business and create brand awareness you will need to have a quality logo that stands out above all of your competition. Because a logo provides a point of recognition for potential customers, having a design that has been created professionally is very important. So hiring the services of an experienced logo designer is always recommended.

What Should I Have in My Logo?

When talking with your logo designer you will need to figure out what you want to include in your logo design. There are many options out there that include making one from scratch and including things like drawings of your business, a specific symbol or you can use a generic logo design. Some people will have a picture of the type of business they do within their logo or they will even have an image of themselves. Logos can also be simpler with things like a last name, monogram of the last or first name or even a monogram of the business name. Depending on the type of business you have you will need to look at your competition to make sure that any logo you have can rival what they have to offer.

Choosing your Logo Designer

Once you know the logo design you want or you want to have someone else’s input on your logo and have them create it, you will want to hire a logo designer. There are many logo designers to choose from out there all of which can provide you with quality top notch designs. You can choose your logo designer as an individual or you can choose a company. Make sure that you check the designer out before you hire them. Ask to see reviews of the company and also ask to look through their portfolio. This will help give you a good idea of what they can do and how many other satisfied customers they have had in the past. Do not hesitate to ask questions and make sure that designer is the correct one for you.

The information given through their presentation and panel discussion was worth dragging us to downtown Chicago.

This year’s workshop listed 32 Free Workshops: from Branding to Business Planning to Engaging your Audience. That sounds a lot of workshops in just 2 days, plus there were 3 different workshops happening at the same time. Checkout the full list of the workshops here. But, the good thing is that all the workshops were audio recorded and some were also video recorded. You can check the current achieve of At Work Forum / Creative Chicago Expo while they are preparing for this years workshops to be added.

Every single day we notice a new logo making it appearance around the web. Most of us will instantly judging the design of the logo itself and start to analyze what makes it effective or how will it affect the company. Creating a logo design is a matter of building a strong visual identity of a company. It surely is not an easy task among other graphic design categories. A designer have to really ‘get into’ the company’s mind and character to be able to design and deliver the effective and proper logo for them.

The very basic aspect for a logo designer to learn is to understand how a visual image work for the community to process and comprehend. How will they interpret what they see from a certain images or shapes. Visual perception help designers in the logo making process to determine people interpretations on:

How the viewer perceives the imagery, the perceptual organization done by the viewer,

How the arrangement of elements is perceived as a whole,

Perception is based on our desire to separate the figure from the ground.

To understand the visual perception, there are 5 properties as to direct a person’s perception of the image based on Gestalt law. Below are the 5 properties of the Gestalt law:

1. SIMILARITY

Similar elements can be grouped together to be perceived as either figure or as ground. It creates a redundancy and predictability of visual information.

2. PROXIMITY

The proximity of these lines creates a shape of a cow, without adding detail or compromising the simplicity of the design.

3. SYMMETRY

Symmetric arrangements are often used in logo design. Again, symmetry creates a redundancy and predictability of visual information. This increases simplicity and clarity.

Some of you might notice the big changes on the website. It’s new, it’s different, yet still classic. I’ve been wanting to redesign this website and finally got the chance to do so earlier this month. If you remember, the previous design was dominated with grey and blue. Well, I got tired of my husband telling me that the grey is too grey, and the website need to have some sign of life or something. So I did. and welcome to the new Chykalophia Design website v.4!

Chykalophia Design's website v.3.5

There are few things which convince me to redesign the website:

I was in need for a better portfolio system,

I started to loose interest on nested comments layout on my blog post,

And just because :)

I’ve spent hours finding the exact WP theme for the back-end that I wanted to modify. Eventually I set my eyes on Era WP – Visual Performance by Christopher Honninger. Not just because it’s already nicely designed, but the function on the back-end is very well organized. I rarely seen that on most WP themes.

Then after couple of days modifying the design to my own design and element, I was even amazed on how helpful Chris with some bugs and some light custom editing I want for the theme. I couldn’t be more happier and excited for this theme. So now, I have a very well functions on my portfolio page, nicely organized posts based on its own categories, few custom touch here and there, I definitely love this theme for my back-end WP theme.

The first time I decided to resign from the company I’ve work for and go freelance I imagined that the road would be easy and that I could design whatever I wanted. Well, it hasn’t worked out completely as I originally planned. The freelancing path isn’t always smooth….. Read more
